Somers Cares

Some of us are not faring well during this pandemic. The first indications of this came last year when the local Food Pantry was showing such an increase in demand. The Somers Lions reached out to the town for help and matched any donations to the food pantry. The response was very generous.

Unfortunately, the need is still there and even more prevalent. The hope that the vaccine can help get back to a more stable world is comforting, but not helping with the current situation. For this reason, the Somers Lions would like to start the Somers Cares Fund which we would administrate, make sure the needs are verified, and ensure all donations go to the right place.

All the money donated to the SLC Charitable Foundation is used to help out specific people in need within our community and to the charities that we support.  Here are some of the ways we use our donations:

  • Hands on projects to help families and the town, for example building the pavilion in Reis Park and expand the kitchen in Van Tassel House to provide meals for people in need within the town
  • Summer Camp Scholarship Program
  • High School Senior Community Service Scholarship

Somers Lions Club Supported Charities

The local Charites the Somers Lions help support focus on helping children and their families with serious illnesses, Veterans as well as the Blind and disabled individuals. They need your support.

LEOS (Leadership – Experience – Opportunity)

The LEO Clubs are the largest youth club of a voluntary character in the world, present in 140 countries with over 160,000 members. LEO Club members are addressed as “LEOs.” The word “Leo” stands for Leadership, Experience, Opportunity.  LEOs conduct various projects in a wide-scope of fields such as health care, elder assistance/service, child care, special needs initiatives, literacy and education, and self-development. LEOs raise funds by conducting fund-raising projects and donate back to those in need within our community. They can partner with projects with another LEO club, sponsoring Lions club, or with an outside organization.

The LEOs Club is a youth (9th – 12th grade) organization of Lions Clubs International and Somers has our own LEOs Club.  We are excited to have one of the largest and most active LEOs Clubs in NY State with over 150 to 200  members each year who perform in excess of 3,400 hours of volunteer service each year.  We encourage our members to explore their Leadership traits by obtaining Experience through the Opportunity of participating in local community service projects.  They are often working, side by side, with Somers Lions and Community leaders who offer mentorship, guidance, and a laugh while working to improve the lives of many in our community.
